Just for one day, I’m inviting you to make a critical distinction between stress and pressure.
But aren’t they are the same? you may be thinking to yourself.
In fact they are really quite different. And it is a difference that makes a difference as well.
Stress or pressure?
What is your largest source of stress? Is it work, family, finances or something else?
Whatever your greatest source of stress, it is something undesired that comes your way.
Stress comes into our lives from the outside, such as an idiot driver or a deadline at work.
Most of the time we think of stress and pressure as the same exact thing.
It’s not, because pressure, on the other hand, is an inside job.
This is because pressure is what we tell ourselves about the stress.
For instance, in the example above, the stress is the deadline at work. We add in pressure when we think or say things like
Its not fair! Ill never be able to get all this done!
A much more empowering approach (inside job) would be to ask yourself
In how many ways can I get all this done, and even more, and enjoy the process?
Some would say this is just playing with semantics. I would say that it is all semantics and furthermore, that it is using the power of language to change your life!
