Are you interested in overcoming fear? Well, let me tell you why you should. If you overcome fear you can do just about anything in this world that you want.

*Realistically speaking, what does “overcoming fear” mean? This question is germane to the heart and soul of this site, Stand for Your Greatness. It means having the audacity and gumption to believe that your life should count for something. Why not? Anyone with an ounce of ego or spirit, should want their life to count for something.

*Standing for Your Greatness means going for a home run when fear says “be satisfied with a single”. This is pretty straight forward. In another words, when you decide to do something, you don’t hold back. This is

You never belittle yourself or put yourself down. You set your goals high enough inorder to afford yourself a solid challenge. As you know, a big goal will also inspire you to achieve far beyond a lesser limited goal.

*The big problem we seniors have, regarding overcoming fear, is that we often let our brains and knowledge work against us. “And why is this?”, you ask. The answer here is blowing in the wind.

I mean, if you are like most people in middle age, you have “seen it all and done it all”. And, having weathered a big chunk of life myself, I can tell you, straight up, that a big slice of life experiences have not been anything to brag about.

I think we can all agree on this point. It’s human nature to “generalize”. And this is what we do. We do this mostly to cope with life. The big problem here is that “generalizing” often times works against our best interest. It serves as a rationalization for not getting or doing what we really want.

This constant frustration we endure from life’s experiences really is the result of fears that we are unaware of or aren’t sure of how to handle. This realization is important, when it comes down to overcoming fear.

*Overcoming fear is really as straightforward as jumping into cold water and taking a swim. You know what I am talking about…You stand at the edge of the pool and test the water. Ugh! It’s cold, right? As you get ready to dive in, you are thinking of that terrible cold water pain you just know you are going to feel and experience.

But, being the tough minded realist that you are, you control your fear and emotions and just dive in. And, after a few strokes on your journey to the other side of the pool, you immediately begin warming up.

Before you know it, you have reached the opposite side of the pool. You have reached your goal. You get out of the pool and dry off. And, most importantly, you feel proud of yourself because you didn’t let fear intimidate you and keep you from doing exactly what you wanted to do.

*Life is precious and doesn’t last forever. It’s latter than you think. So what are you waiting for? I am talking about doing the things you always wanted to do, but “have never got around to doing them”. Maybe you need a kick in the pants, inorder to get going.

God forbid, you should have a life threatening sickness! And then realize, you are not going to live forever. Subsequently, you realize that you better get going, and start doing what you have been “dying” to do during your whole life.

The good news is that just by contemplating these things you want to do, automatically initiates the overcoming fear process. Your mind begins replacing the negative with the positive. I am talking about overcoming fear or breaking through your fear threshold and latching onto your real desire to do or achieve something that you really want. But, up to now, the emotion of fear has blocked your progress from obtaining your goal.

*The trick of overcoming fear is to consistently feel you are making progress towards your goal. Once you truly realize that your goal is not a fantasy of your imagination, but a very strong possibility that you can and will achieve your desire, then, my friend you are on your way towards success.

*While you are on your “journey of self-realization”, be sure and bring your lofty goal down to the world of reality. By this, I mean that you should work towards an “incremental” progressive plan that will step by step and inch by inch lead to your objective. Once you have done this, you will “own” your future and nobody or anything can stop you.

Believe me, you will be so busy implementing your strategy that you won’t have time to be fearful or scarred.

Guess what problem you and I both share? The real problem we both have is that we, most likely, are not even aware that we have deep rooted fears that are holding us back from getting what we want. By luck and circumstance, I discovered my own Achilles heal just a couple years ago.

Just to give you a taste of what is to come here, let me ask you this question. Why do you think juvenile delinquents who participate in martial arts do so well with these programs? Young people that have trouble adjusting to society, find life becomes more rewarding and enjoyable when they get involved with martial arts.

Why is this? I’ll tell you why. The deep rooted fear these kids have is placated, subdued and channeled in a positive manner when they learn to kick butt in a martial art class. They channel their “aggression” in a positive manner. Their self esteem increases along with their self-confidence. Their underlying fear and rage becomes pacified and subdued.

If you have enjoyed this topic and if enough people indicate an interest in more discussions similar to this, we can continue this theme of overcoming fear inorder to get what we want.

I have personal insight into this because I am a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do.
