Indeed the beginning of this year has not been easy. My cousin was battling for his life and now he has gone to a better place. It was heart wrenching to witness a loved one being debilitated by sickness and at the end - his departure. The aftermath of preparing for his final departure from this earth was just as difficult.

The eventual day finally arrived when we sent him off. No matter how unwilling we were, we still have to let him go. Then and there I realized we have to learn to let go in life. By doing so, we can then move on.

Before we can embrace this New Year, we have to let go in order to contain what is coming ahead. Imagine with me, a clenched fist would not be able to contain new things as the hands are already full. However, when the hands are released and opened, new things could be placed into the hands.

Before we look at the New Year, what are the things in your life that you would have to learn to let go about the past year?

Letting go of our excess baggage on whatever that has happened in Year 2007 is important. There may be events, people, things that have troubled and brought challenges to your life. By letting go, it will help one to face and come to terms with what has happened so as to move on. Bringing our excess baggage into the New Year will impede us.

Though the act of letting go seemed so simple and easy, the process that was undergone is more important. Very often, we are bogged down by our past when we reach out into the future. Instead of enabling us to be wiser and stronger from our past experiences, we are bogged down and held back. Letting go involves facing and then coming to terms with the facts before one can let go. It is not running away but having the courage to acknowledge what has happened and accepting it.

If today, there are areas in your life that need to be let go of, take a moment to ponder and in time to come, let go. Why not open your hands to embrace the New Year and see the exciting opportunities lying ahead.
