He suffered from a mental disorder, which caused his thinking to become extremely obsessive and skewed at times. I worked for the Mental Health Association of Mississippi as a counselor and I tried to spend as much time with this guy as possible. One day he was obsessing on a girl he thought was his girl friend. Actually, he had never had a girl friend. He met this girl one day and determines she was his girl friend, little to her knowledge. He wasnt dangerous at all and meant no harm to her but he couldnt get his mind of this girl. He was going on and on about how she didnt love him and he was just miserable. I kept telling him to forget it and think about something else but it wasnt working. Finally, I remembered reading a chapter of Joel Olsteen book, Your Best Life Now titled Changing the Channel. So I told the boy to change the channel. I held up my hand like, I had a channel changer in it and acted like, I was clicking. To make a long story short, he understood. He started raising his hand and clicking like, he was changing the channel.
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever
things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these
things. Phillipians 4: 8
When I first wake up my first thoughts are not so spiritual. In fact, my first thought is normally, “God I don’t want to get up and work today.” Or, “Whoa, my body hurts” or “Oh me another day.” After I get my first cup of coffee into my blood stream and my head begins to clear a little I can then start to change what I am thinking. Well, actually I start changing my thoughts on the way to the _____you fill in the blank. I begin to see my life through God’s eyes and mind. I start to tell myself. Oh boy it is going to be the greatest day of my
life.
Then, I get out my bible and read something from Psalms 100: 4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. It takes work to change what I think but if I make a decision to be happy today I
normally end up happy, regardless of what I feel.
So, let me encourage you to change the channel in your mind to something positive and up lifting. If the guy I worked with can do it so can you.
